The recent global recession has forced many people to consider their options when it comes to holidays and business. More people are staying at home and taking the option to explore what the UK has to offer by packing their things into a trailer and taking off. Businesses are also increasing their use of trailers as a way of trying to reduce costs by transporting items and goods themselves rather than paying someone else to do it.
Towing a trailer tent, however, does require a different level of awareness to normal car driving. There are safety tips that need to be followed in order to make sure that you get to your destination in one piece and that you do not hinder other people on the way. For instance, when loading a trailer tent you should ensure that the weight is evenly distributed and more importantly, that the load itself cannot move whilst in transit. You need to fasten the items securely with ropes or cords. If the load does move during transport, you can virtually guarantee that the trailer will move with it making it difficult to control. Load the trailer tent from the front to the back, trying to ensure that the bulk of the load is as near the front as possible. You should try not to have too much weight concentrated near any tailgate. Before you set off, you should ensure that the linkage between your car and the trailer tent is securely fastened. You should also check that the trailer tent lights are working and that the trailer tent number plate matches that of the towing vehicle.
Take the time to practice driving your car and trailer tent in a confined area, slowly, to make sure there are no unexpected surprises. You need more space to turn corners when pulling a trailer and you should also be careful that you can clearly see in your rear view mirrors. Although most trailer tents are designed to be compact, if yours is particularly high or wide, you may need to purchase some extension mirrors, commonly seen on cars when towing a caravan.
Don’t forget that the trailer tent will require different – and wider – handling at corners and if you drive near a pavement area, you need to make sure that the trailer does not creep up on to the kerb, as this can cause severe injury. Try not to make any sudden turns or moves. It is advisable to look ahead and prepare properly, signalling well in advance before you make any manoeuvre. Do not forget that you will need a longer stopping distance when pulling a heavy load. If you stop suddenly, you may well find that the momentum of the loaded trailer tent will push you forward. Again, this can be potentially dangerous and reinforces the need to have your load securely fastened. Also allow a little more distance between you and the car in front.
Parking can cause difficulties, especially in limited spaces. If you have the time before you set off – practice. If you have someone travelling with you, don’t be afraid to ask them to guide you while you are parking. Whilst most of these things are common sense, you should also take the trouble to carry out bit of research to make sure that you fully comply with the law regarding load allowances. There may be restrictions based upon your vehicle type and whether or not you have passed your driving test. You should also ensure that your insurance is updated with the correct level of cover including, if applicable, the valuable trailer tent you are towing!
